Anniversary of the Polish legislative election of 1989

4th June we celebrated the anniversary of the Polish legislative election of 1989. Poland became the first country of the Eastern Bloc in which democratically elected representatives gained real power. The resounding victory of the Solidarity opposition in the freely contested races paved the way to the fall of Communism in Poland.

"Remarkable victory of Solidarity in the elections 89 years and all of its internal and international implications is an undeniable fact. Among the entire sequence of events which took place this year in Europe and in the world, the results of Polish elections played a groundbreaking role. It is us, after all, that showed that communism ends irrevocably, that the king is naked. (...) The results of the elections saved with the real numbers were a turning point in thinking about the future of Europe"
