Professor Bronisław Geremek’s 80th birthday anniversary

Almost twenty years ago, during the inaugural lecture in the International Chair Collège de France, Professor Bronislaw Geremek said: "The historian dealing with the past, feels a bit anachronistic in relations with actuality, ranging from the affirmation of utility of their knowledge for understanding the present. He tells the truth about what has happened and raises some questions about human being. He may have the right to think that looking at the people of former times he can help contemporary people to understand the entanglements of fate and history”.

This approach to the course of events led to the involvement of Professor in the most important and most current affairs of social and political life. He was one of the most important characters in the liberation movements in Central and Eastern Europe that led to the collapse of communism, he contributed significantly to the process of democratic transition in 1980. He inspired many of the actions of "Solidarity" in Poland, played a fundamental role in the conclusion of the Round Table agreement, and the first partially free elections in 1989, and then the Polish membership in NATO and the European Union

On March, 6th he would have turned 80.
