Journalists on study visit in Poland and Lithuania (21-24 May 2014)

On 21st -24th  May 2014 a group of Polish and Lithuanian  journalists took part in a study visit to both countries. The goal of the project, implemented jointly with the Jerzy Giedroyć Polish-Lithuanian Forum for  Dialogue and Cooperation, was to counteract stereotypes in  relations between the two countries,  by acquainting media representatives with the interaction of the two national communities and states,  also  at the local level. The project was implemented with the support of the PZU Foundation.

In Poland , the journalists met at the Lithuanian Consulate in Sejny  with representatives of the Lithuanian minority. At nearby Berżniki, the journalists visited a local cemetery  and had a meeting with Rev. Władysław Napiórkowski.

During the Lithuanian part of the project, the journalists met at Šalčininkai (Soleczniki) with members of the Polish minority, and in Vilnius – with politicians, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius and leaders of  parliamentary factions.

The visit concluded with a presentation of  the  Jerzy Giedroyć Awards, conferred by the Jerzy Giedroyć  Polish-Lithuanian Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation. This year the winners were Adam Michnik and Professor Bogdan Szlachta. Laudations for the laureates were delivered by Tomas Venclova and Professor Alvydas Jokubaitis. The presentation of the awards was followed by a debate on Polish-Lithuanian relations, with the participation of the journalists who had taken part in the study visit.
